Services will be held Nov. 4 at First United Methodist Church in Jefferson for Marlys Ostrander, 79, of Jefferson.
Interment will be at the Jefferson Municipal Cemetery.
Marlys Renee Ostrander, age 79, of Jefferson, passed away October 29, 2023. Marlys was born to Cecil and Elinor (Farquhar) Barrett on July 16, 1944, in Jefferson. She graduated from Jefferson Community High School in 1962. Marlys married Jerry Ostrander in 1962 and they were married for 61 years. They were blessed with three children, Lisa, Jay, and Jamie.
Marlys had a rewarding working career in Jefferson. She was employed at Hawn’s CPA, Henkel and Associates, and most recently at MacDonald Insurance/Iowa Realty. It was here that she obtained her real estate license and began her realtor career selling houses, acreages, and farmland in Jefferson and surrounding Greene County. She really enjoyed her time working with all her co-workers and clients.
Marlys loved many activities such as playing cards (especially bridge) with friends and family, traveling, handling the books for the farms, wintering in Florida and Arizona, reading, walking, and watching various events of her kids and grandchildren. She was also a member of P.E.O., Jefferson United Methodist Church, Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, Beta Tau Delta Sorority which she helped with many local charity balls, and Classic Glass Corvette Club. She was also a volunteer for many years at the United Methodist Church where she helped with weddings.
Her favorite place from home was at East Lake Okoboji house where much family time was enjoyed.
Marlys is survived by her husband Jerry; children Lisa (Ostrander) Green, Jay (Debi) Ostrander, and Dr. Jamie (Donna) Ostrander; grandchildren Ashlee (Kyle) Pickett, Jason (Hannah) Ostrander, Nathan (Kerianne) Green, Emily (Jacob) Schmidt, Justin (Laynne) Ostrander, Hailey Ostrander, and Allison Ostrander. She also had eight great-grandchildren, Ryker Ostrander, Grayden Ostrander, Treyce Ostrander, Theo Pickett, Piper Green, Berkley Ostrander, Kamdyn Ostrander, and Liam Schmidt, with two more on the way. Marlys is also survived by her sister Margot and brother-in-law James Hinchliff, sister in-law Deanna Clark, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Dennis and Diane Ostrander, and Kevin and Jackie Ostrander; and many nieces and nephews.
Marlys is preceded in death by her parents Cecil and Elinor Barrett, her in-laws Wayne and Virgirene Ostrander; and a brother in-law Darrell Clark.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Gentiva Hospice of Carroll, IA or in Marlys’s name to benefit a dementia society.
